Goods: Sea Cargo Rethinking — Ship Waste Parts Regeneration Project
Exhibition Key Visual Design
A collaborative project between Yang Ming Marine Transport and MUJI, Goods: Sea Cargo Rethinking explores the regeneration of ship waste materials into new everyday objects.
Initiated by the Yang Ming Cultural Foundation in 2022, the project rethinks the value of industrial surplus through design, research, and experimentation. After one year of field studies, material exploration, and prototyping, six lifestyle objects were created. In 2023, the project further collaborated with MUJI to develop a mirror cabinet using polyethylene storage boxes and eye bolts commonly found on container ships.
The exhibition was presented at MUJI Miramar Store Open MUJI from March 2 to 15, 2023, highlighting the concept of a zero-waste lifestyle.
As over 80% of global goods are transported by sea, many ship parts are retired after use for safety reasons. This project seeks to reimagine these decommissioned materials, transforming them into new design possibilities.
Designer Yang Shui-yuan led the development of the works, investigating shipyards and maritime systems to deconstruct industrial components and reinterpret their forms into functional everyday objects, emphasizing the sustainable potential of material reuse.
